A Tribute to Zelda

Written by Beatrice Bottler Solomons (Soc) in November, 1998

One day last week, I received a call from my cousin Zelda Schwartz Mayoff (Abr), who lives in Montreal, but was visiting her daughter Bonnie Mayoff Cordez and family here in Toronto for a few days. Zelda always makes a point of calling me, if only for a visit on the phone, or better still, a get together for lunch, which we did this time. Why I mention this is because we have been friends for over 65 years and are very fond of one another.

Zelda met her husband, Solly (Abr), my cousin, when every Shabbat he would stop in at my home with his father Abraham for a snack on their way to Shul. You see, Zelda and I were neighbours as well as friends. What is so special about this? I shall continue...

Readers must know about my sister, Bessie, who is the oldest of the Bottler children and unfortunately has been an invalid most of her life, which made it necessary for her to be cared for in institutions and hospitals. Despite all this, we still have her, Thank God!

When circumstances caused our family to move west to Windsor, Ontario my mother Sonya's main concern was "who will visit Bessie?" She spoke about this to Zelda, who hugged and kissed her and told her not to worry, she would take care of Bessie (the only one who was interested, incidentally, in spite of our then large family). It has been over 50 years and Zelda is still visiting Bessie.

Zelda is my cousin by marriage, but such a dear friend, I think of her as a sister. I asked her on this visit how it was that we were so lucky to have her in our family. She answered with her sweet smile that she wouldn't let go of Solly once they met.

A comment to Art... you are trying so hard and spending so much time in bringing our family together. To find another Zelda in our midst would indeed be fortunate and a blessing.

This issue's quiz. In the photo above, can you guess which branch we're from? Hint: Referring to the father, Who is he? Answer on page 12.

Congratulations and best wishes to Alice Gerstman on her recent move. Alice has exchanged the East coast for the West coast, snow for rain and her loving NYC friends for a darling grand-daughter in Long Beach. Good luck, Alice!
