1998 Reunion Cancelled

Well, we tried. But we were unable to meet the required minimum number of rooms for the reunion, so unfortunately it had to be cancelled. It was a very disappointing turn of events. All the phone calls and correspondence asking me to put a reunion together went for naught. I guess the likelihood of a west coast reunion is not in the cards and any reunion in the immediate future seems nebulous. I will default to anyone who wants to host a future reunion anywhere. It would be nice to have one in 2000. I encourage any branch wishing to host a reunion to discuss it among themselves and then contact me for publication. I will be glad to provide the complete mailing list for survey purposes, too. Since getting the whole mispocha together is as difficult a task as it is, I ask you to consider a regional reunion. Don't let the closeness we felt at the last two reunions fade. Please arrange for a small get together in your own area. It is important to keep our family ties. On a similar note, this year marked our 3rd annual Labor Day mini-reunion in San Luis Obispo, California. Those attending this year have decided to expand next year's get-together from two days to three. We enjoy getting together so much that we just can't do it in two days.

Back River Cemetery Vandalized Again

An article in the Montreal Gazette this past August mentioned some vandalism at Back River Cemetery and Susan Mayoff Vamos (Sam) confirmed damage to one MAYOV stone. She also confirmed that it is not Zelig's or Shifra & Israel's. The stone has been toppled onto its face and the name MAYOV on the back of the stone is visible but due to it's weight, it could not be turned over for full identification.

Newsletter's Future in Doubt

Will this, the sixth year of publication be the last? I have had almost no input for the better part of six months. If it wasn't for the assistance of three or four regular contributors, all these pages would be blank. I'm discouraged and without your help, this newsletter will fade away. I have already dropped to three issues a year and will probably cut back to two. In that regard, those of you who have access to the Mayoff Family Web site know it's the quickest way to get news of your extended family. Breaking news appears within hours and I suggest checking the web site between issues. I appreciate the e-mail reports and photos. Keep them coming. This issue, with its color photographs is viewable on-line, too. (www.mayoff.com)

Branch identifiers

To help our readers figure out who's who and from which branch they descend, I am using abbreviated identifiers taken from the first three letters of the name of each of Zelig's children:

Abr=Abraham; Bun=Bunya; Hen=Henya; Isr=Israel; Lei=Leizer; Sam=Sam; Sch=Schloima; Soc=Soche/Socha/Sonia; Ush=Usher.

From Joyce Singer (Isr) of Cambridge, MA... I am glad to receive the newsletters. Thanks for all your hard work.

From Claire (Drucker) Slavin (Hen) of Louisville, KY... Just a note to say I loved your Spring issue. What a surprise it was to see my grandchildren appear.

From Marla Rapoport Goldsmith (Sch) of Montreal, Quebec... I am sorry to hear about the reunion being cancelled. We couldn't see our way clear this summer... Perhaps in a year or two there will be greater interest for many reasons:

1. more time to save up.

2. more time in between reunions and therefore greater chance of being more excited to catch up and see each other... I can only speak for myself when I say that I appreciate all the hard work of the committee and it is with regret that we were not able to go but hope that we can all get together again in the future.

Who am I? Hint: I attended both reunions. 1973 Photo. Answer on page 11.
